200th Anniversary

This year (2019) is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Piazzi Smyth, who was known throughout his life as “CPS”. A number of things are going on to celebrate that anniversary.

  • We began this website dedicated to his amazing work. CPS has also come alive on Twitter and Instagram, along with his scientist wife Jessie. They post every day at One O’Clock!
  • A new exhibition about his life and work is opening in the Nelson Monument, on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. Read more about the Piazzi Smyth exhibition.
  • A Symposium is being held in September, gathering together historians and scientists to discuss the life, work and legacy of CPS. Read more about the Piazzi Smyth Symposium.
  • We are putting together a kind of Citizen Science experiment, involving both schools and the public, recording your experiences of the One O’Clock Gun, and creating a modern version of the Victorian Time Gun Delay Map. Read more about the Time Gun experiment.
